Welcome to Year 5

Our Year 5 teachers are Miss Robinson and Miss Chronnell, ably supported by our amazing teaching assistants, Mrs. Lanahan and Miss Pirie.

Year 5 is an exciting and challenging year for the children, where as part of upper Key Stage 2, they are expected to take a more mature and independent approach to learning. They will be expected to work on their own initiative and work closely with their peers in a range of team situations both inside and outside of the classroom.  They will also become more aware of the value of their education and continue to develop a love of learning that will stand them in good stead in the future.

The curriculum in Year 5 is packed with lots of exciting learning opportunities, with topics such as the Victorians to inspire the children in their learning.  They will be encouraged to develop their sense of curiosity about a whole range of different subjects and books through a more enquiry-based approach to learning, giving them the skills that they need to investigate, question, draw conclusions and develop supported opinions.  A love of reading and a desire to choose, read and talk about the exciting books that they have read will be encouraged all the way through the year.

We strongly encourage parents and carers to be involved in their children’s education and learning and are always glad to hear your comments.  Please do not hesitate to get in touch with a member of the team if you have any issues or concerns and we will certainly do our best to resolve them. We very much value your support during the course of the year as we work together to help our Year 5 learners achieve their potential here at St. Thomas of Canterbury.

ENGLISH
Our class book is Street Child. This is an exceptionally moving book in which the reader views the sorrow of
Poor Victorian life through a young boy’s eyes. This book supports our topic of Victorians and we shall be writing setting descriptions, character descriptions, wanted posters and story writing. Discuss with your children what they have learnt about in literacy and talk through their thoughts and ideas about life as a child in The Victorian times.

MATHEMATICS
Use HIT THE BUTTON website to brush up on times tables. It is essential that all multiplication and correseponding division facts are recalled quickly.
We will be reading and writing numbers to 100,000 in maths lessons.

Homework:

Homework will be set on a Friday and collected in on the following Monday. The homework will consist of both Maths and English. Please spend no longer that 30minutes on each set task unless they really want to.
Your child will be given spellings every week. Children need to know how to use the spellings in the correct context, some children may find it useful to write sentences using the words and use a dictionary to check the meaning. Please en- courage your child to learn their spellings. The spellings will be tested.

Enterprise event - donation to charity

When a small donation to send to a charity of the children’s choice, to buy the bracelets they made during our Enterprise afternoon was suggested, it was heartwarming to see just how kind, thoughtful and generous the children were, with many bringing way more than they needed to.

Our chosen charity was Cancer Research. Well done 5C 👍🏼
