In Maths this half term we are focusing on number and place value. In our Maths lessons we will be looking at numbers up to 120, making and identifying different numbers and number words. We will explore how to partition a number into tens and ones and knowing quickly what 10  more & less is and 1 more & less of a number is. We will learn how to round a number to the nearest ten by looking at the amount of ones and seeing which ten it is closest to. In our Mental Oral and Counting, we have been recapping everything we did in Year 1 to consolidate our learning before we move on to Year 2 objectives.

We have also started learning our times tables and are loving practising on Times Tables Rock Stars! We are continuing to practice multiplying and dividing by 10, to keep improving our weekly challenge. By the end of Year 2, we must be able to multiply and divide by 2, 5 and 10.

So far this term, our writing has been inspired by "Whiffy Wilson", the smelly wolf who refused to take a bath! The children have designed a wanted poster to try and track down the smelly wold and soon they will be writing character descriptions, predicting what will happen next, along with retelling the story.

Both classes are working very hard in our writing to make sure we can write simple sentences, that make sense and are punctuated correctly. Once the children have achieved this, they will then be expected to include compound sentences in their writing. A compound sentence joins two ideas together using a conjunction (and, or, so, but, yet, because). The children are aware of their own writing targets and will continue to develop these this year.

Our author this year is the wonderful Roald Dahl. Both classes have already read Mr Twit which we thoroughly enjoyed! We are looking forward to reading more Roald Dahl books.

Reading books are changed every Monday. The children are expected to read daily at home.

In PSHE, we discussed our understanding of the word 'rights'. We learnt that all living things have rights - the right to life, to be kept safe, and to be protected and cared for. The children understand their rights within school. They have a right to a good education, to try and make friends and to be kept safe. The children also came up with their own rights in and outside of school!

This term, the children are learning about new beginnings and baptism. Last week, we discussed new starts we have had in our lives and we spoke about how feelings can change when something new is about to begin. This week, the children looked at God's creation of the world and we discussed why God's creation is important to us.

Here we are drawing our versions of God's creations!

This term, we are understanding the proportions of a balanced diet. We completed an investigation into how much sugar is in common drinks (Coke, Lucozade, Fruit shoot and Orange juice). Before carrying out the investigation we predicted which drink would have the least amount of sugar and which drink would have the most amount of sugar. We then read the amount of sugar for each drink and weighed this out on the scales.

Below is what we found out!

Year 2 ART

This term we have been looking at Stephen Wiltshire. We have learnt a lot about him and his wonderful art work. Using different sketching pencils and having a go at sketching one of Stephen’s art pieces we are almost ready for our final pieces! We have enjoyed learning lots of the sketching skills Stephen uses!
