We are aware that children in Early Years are engaging with electronic devices that can connect to the internet and that many children are going online from a young age. Therefore it is important that they know about how to keep safe online.

Please take a look at some of the parent resources below if you would like to discuss online safety with your child at home:

Today we had some special visitors come to our school!

Farmer David had received our letters, which asked lots of questions about his farm, so he decided he would come into school to answer them in person. He even brought some special friends along. The children loved walking the alpacas, stroking the ducks and feeding the goats. Mrs Tuson & Miss Leveridge both had the tricky job of catching the ducks and putting them back in their pen. Mr Deane even came to join the fun and helped to feed the 3 week old lamb!

Making yummy easter cakes

In school we have been learning all about Lent. Holy Week is the final week of Lent, ending in Easter celebrations. Read through the resources below with your child to learn more about the important religious events we discuss at this time of year.

In school, we talk about the important ways we can keep healthy. An important part of our daily routine is brushing our teeth twice a day. We have also been brushing our teeth after lunch in school too! See below some helpful tips to support your child with their oral health at home.

We loved sharing our toys from home with our friends!

The children returned to school after half term to find that there were some new additions to EYFS! Whilst the children waited patiently for  the chicks to hatch, we learnt all about the life cycle of a hen. Luckily, the children were able to see the chicks begin to pip their way out of their eggs, they could hardly believe their eyes! After the chicks had dried off, we spent time gently caring for our new little friends. We even made information books about chicks to share with our friends around school

We have been busy learning how to subitise. How many counters can you see on the plate?

Writing Challenge

We have been busy applying our phonics knowledge to writing CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. The children have been taught how to form most letters and should be able to write these independently. Encourage your child to look at the scenes below and record some CVC words in a list. It is highly recommended that they do this on lined paper to encourage writing on the line.

We are enjoying our literacy challenges in school!

This week, we have been thinking about Remembrance Day, and how it is a day to remember all who fought in the First World War. We also shared how it is a day to honour veterans and soldiers who are still serving for their country. Poppies are also worn on Remembrance Day, as they are the flowers that grew on the battlefields when the First World War ended. We have been busy making our own poppies & class wreath, and this helped us to reflect during our whole school minute’s silence today.

John Augustus Tolton

As part of Black History Month, each year group has been looking at an influential black person. In reception, we have been learning about John Augustus Tolton. Born in Missouri in 1854, he is most well known for being the first black Catholic priest in America.

This success did not come easily to Tolton, he began life without his freedom as a slave to a white Catholic family. His father was able to escape slavery due to Civil War by joining the army, but Tolton and his mother remained. He and his mother were baptised as Catholic due to their position as slaves to a Catholic household. Despite his unfair mistreatment, Tolton grew up with the love of Jesus Christ in his heart. In 1862, he and his mother bravely escaped slavery by crossing over the Mississippi River into Illinois. Tolton's mother turned to him and said, "John, boy, you’re free. Never forget the goodness of the Lord."

Even though Tolton experienced racial adversity throughout his life, he remained devoted to the Catholic Church and served God by making his life a living example of God's words. After graduating high school, Tolton began his priesthood studies in Rome. In 1886, after six years of study in the seminary, Tolton was ordained to the priesthood in Rome at the age of 31. He had expected to serve in an African parish; yet he was directed to return to the United States to serve the black community. Fr. Augustus Tolton became the first Black American priest in the United States of America! Born as a slave in America, he became an American hero! For a brief moment in history, racial differences that only ran skin deep were forgotten because of this great man of God.

Hand in hand with each other, we will continue in the tradition of Father Augustus Tolton: “Follow not the well-worn path. Go instead where there is no path, and blaze a trail.”
