Reception

We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Easter holiday! At the end of last term, we were very busy in Reception preparing for our Easter celebrations. We had our Easter bonnet parade, chocolate egg hunt and made delicious chocolate nest treats!

This half-term in Religious Education we have been teaching the children about the important events of Holy Week. The children made crosses and Easter candles to show how we remember Jesus' death on Good Friday. We also made an Easter garden to display in each classroom.

We are starting to see more signs of Spring (despite some signs of Winter still trying to linger!) The children have enjoyed gathering natural materials outside that they then used to make Spring collages, as well as using their early writing skills to record some things that they saw on their Spring hunt. Every child also planted their own bean seed which they will get to take home with them before the Easter break and hopefully you can watch it grow at home!

We like to ensure that children learn about different celebrations from different cultures. Some of our children who celebrate Eid were excited to share some of their family traditions. We made our own henna designs as well as cards to wish people Eid Mubarak!

Every year we open up the EYFS unit so that children can explore St Patrick's activities in all four Nursery and Reception classrooms! The children were invited to wear the colours of the Irish flag to school and in the afternoon we tasted some Irish snacks and treats.

It was such a pleasure to welcome the important ladies in the children's lives to our Mother's Day breakfast. The children really enjoyed spending time with their family in the classroom and making some lovely crafts to thank their mums for all that they do! We asked every child why they love their mummy and wrote down their responses for a picture - have a look below!

Our World Book Day theme this year was favourite bedtime stories. The children came to school in their pyjamas and were invited to bring in their favourite bedtime book. It was lovely to see the children sharing their favourite stories with one another, and even having a go at designing their own book covers!

Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday is about using up the last of any unhealthy ingredients ready to make a Lenten sacrifice, such as giving up treats. We discussed some things that we could try and do to feel closer to Jesus during lent and shared ideas about being kind. This inspired us to decorate our pancakes with kind faces!

For Chinese New Year the children were able to explore both of the Reception classrooms, which were set up with lots of fun activities. To celebrate the year of the horse, we had a variety of horse-themed crafts. We also enjoyed tasting some delicious Chinese food.

Our Reception Valentines Bake Sale was a huge hit, helping the school to raise lots of funds for our mental health resources. The children enjoyed making heart-shaped rice crispy cakes and decorating buns with icing and sprinkles. We hope you enjoyed them!

Phonics & Reading Meeting 03.02.2026
Thank you to those of you who were able to attend our Phonics & Reading meeting. If you were unable to attend, or would like a copy of the presentation, please see below. You can also visit the 'For Parents' page of the Little Wandle website by clicking here: https://www.littlewandle.org.uk/resources/for-parents/

As part of your child's homework, please take some time to show them the below presentation all about Epiphany. In school we discussed how these three special visitors can be known by different names: the three kings, the three wise men or magi.

We hope all our families had a wonderful holiday and we wish you a very happy new year! Please enjoy taking a look at some of our Christmas activities from the last weeks of the Autumn half term.

We have enjoyed learning about Diwali, also known as the festival of light. The children listened to the story of Rama & Sita before watching a video about how some families like to celebrate Diwali. We then created mendhi patterns on hand templates, practised some rangoli patterns and even made some paper diwa lamps!

Over the last couple of weeks we have been learning all about the Autumn season and talking about the changes we have noticed outside. We have loved using the natural resources brought in by parents from your autumn hunts for a variety of exciting crafts and activities! Take a look at some of the fun we've been having:

We have also been discussing the different kinds of food we can eat to keep our bodies warm during the colder Autumn months. Our first class poem has helped us with some ideas!

Today we made some delicious porridge with honey. The children helped to add the ingredients and then mix them all up ready to be heated. Then we enjoyed trying it together on the carpet during story time!

We have been having fun exploring our classroom in Reception L!

We have enjoyed learning our first class song:
