Year 2 Mrs Losada

Welcome to Year 2L

Welcome to our class page. Every week we will try and update our page so you can see what exciting work we do in class. We hope you enjoy browsing!

Mrs Losada, Miss Mcgrath and Mrs Rafferty

Spring Term Topic:

London and the Great Fire of London

This half term we have been learning about the Great Fire of London. the children have been researching what happened and even created  timelines to show the key events. For homework I asked the children to make a Tudor house and I was amazed with the effort that went into them. Have a look:

Our Visit to the Ten Centre

Today, we spent a morning at the Salford TEN centre where we made our own Great Fire of London Animations. The children prepared all the props them used the ICAN ANIMATE software to make their own moving picture. At first it was quite tricky to make small movements, but then we got the hang of it. Once we made our animations we went into the visual space and imagined we were back in 1066. The class loved this!

I was very pleased with the children's behaviour and once again they were a credit to our school.

Fairtrade Fortnight March 2014

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is a simple yet incredibly important idea – it’s all about giving the people who produce the things you buy a fair price for their work.

This may seem obvious, but lots of people in poorer countries have to sell their goods at prices so low that they can’t make a decent living.

Often, only a tiny bit of the money you pay for something goes to the person who actually made it.  This happens a lot when we import things from poorer countries.

We made persuasive adverts using the iMovie software to encourage people to buy fairtrade items. Have a look:

World Book Day  March 2014

World Book Day was a great success this year. The children dressed as their favourite book characters and paraded around the hall. The winners of our class were Jayven and Heidi for their Harry Potter characters. The children enjoyed visiting the library and writing a book review about their favourite story. This is something that we are encouraging the children to do in their reading records, rather than the parents signing their books. It would be great for the children to tell me what they enjoyed, who was their favourite character and why etc.

Have a look at our world book day pictures below:

Library Launch

We have reopened our fantastic library. The parents and children came in after school to choose their favourite books this week.

The library will now be open every evening after school for you to bring your child to change their book. On a Thursday lunchtime year 2L will be allowed in the library for their lunchtime club.

Autumn 2 Topic: Flight

This half term we have been learning all about flight and who invented flying machines. We researched  the work of Leonardo Di Vinci and the Wright Brothers, along with the first female pilot, Amelia Earheart.

In literacy we studied a number of traditional stories and alternative traditional stories. The children then created their very own traditional story based on 'Pigs Might Fly'.

During the last week the children performed a fantastic play called' Prickly Hay'. The staff and I were so pleased with all the hard work and effort the children put into learning their lines and the songs. Thanks for supporting us. Below is a video of the children's play. We hope you enjoy it

Enjoying Traditional Stories

This half term we have been fantastic authors and Mrs Losada is so impressed with our writing. The children have worked hard to create their very own traditional stories and here are a few for you to share

DT Puppets

During our design and technology unit we have created our very own traditional story character puppets. The children designed their favourite character and wrote a set of instruction about how to make it. They really enjoyed the sewing part of this unit and I've never seen them all so quiet whilst they were concentrating! Here are some pictures of us making our puppets

Please practise our Christmas play songs whilst you are at home.

This youtube clip has all the songs in our play, but the teacher looks very similar to Mr Stenton!

Using Expression

This week we have used the morfo app on the iPads to create the characters in our alternative traditional story. The children practised changing their voices in role as the wolf or the pigs! We had lots of fun!

We are Authors

Tick Tock .....

This week we have been learning how to tell the time. This is a really important skill that the children must practise at home too. The year 2 expectation is that children can tell the time to 5 to and 5 past by the end of year 2. Start by teaching your child o'clock and half past, then move to quarter to and quarter past before you introduce 5 to and 5 past.

Below is our topic web for this half term. Have a look at how you can help your child at home. I have also attached our calculations policy. This will show you the methods of we use through school to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication and division:

We have been busy during Autumn 1

Last half term we became palaeontologists as we learnt all about dinosaurs.

In literacy we created information books full of exciting dinosaur facts that we published in our library. Some children used the ipads to create e books which we have shared below.

We also became dinosaur detectives at our visit to Manchester Museum.

Exciting Ebooks

It is really important that gthe children have an opportunity to publish their writing.

Some of the children used our new ipads to create their very own ebooks.

Have a read of some of their fantastic facts below:

In art we have been looking at different types of environmental art.

The children have created their very own natural collages on the corridor outside our classroom. Come and have a look at our art gallery.

In Numeracy we have been learning about money and how to add 10ps and 1ps. The children have been using this knowledge to solve real life problems.

For example, I went to the shop and bought a cake for 22p and a lolly for 12p. The children will add the tens 20p + 10p, the add the ones, 2p + 2p. So, the answer is 34p

Parents Evening

A big thank you to all the parents who came to see me on parents evening. It was great to see you and discuss the progress your child is making.

I have attached the information about the expectations of year 2:
